A strong feature of the All About Spelling program is the continual, individualized review. This customizable review ensures that your students don’t forget what you teach them and that they get the practice they need in exactly the areas they need it. Much of the review is accomplished with the index card box that you set up when you first receive the program.
Setting Up the Spelling Review Box
Each student should have his own index card box so you can tailor his review. One student may need extra practice with particular Phonogram Cards, while another student may need extra practice spelling certain words. The individual index card boxes allow customized instruction.
Put the index card dividers in this order:
-
Phonogram Cards Review divider
-
Phonogram Cards Mastered divider
-
Phonogram Cards Future Lessons divider
-
Sound Cards Review divider
-

-

Then put the flashcards behind the appropriate Future Lessons dividers. For example, all of the Phonogram Cards will go behind the Phonogram Cards Future Lessons divider. Now the index card box is ready for the first lesson.
Using the Spelling Review Box
At the beginning of each lesson you will find a note regarding which new cards you will need. The lesson then begins with a quick review of previously learned material—that is, all of the cards behind the Review dividers. If you feel that your student has mastered a particular card, move that card behind the appropriate Mastered divider.
What is considered a mastered card? These are the cards that your student knows thoroughly. He can respond quickly and easily when you hold up the card. He does not hesitate to think of the answer. There is no doubt in your mind that he has, in fact, mastered the card.
Cards that you feel still need to be reviewed in subsequent lessons get filed behind the Review dividers.
This consistent review method will accelerate your student’s learning and is well worth the time spent at the beginning of each lesson.
Other methods of review are incorporated into the program as well, including practice with the letter tiles and dictation of phrases and sentences. The combination of review techniques ensures that your student retains the knowledge he needs to become an independent speller.
