Uses of the program:
You, as the teacher, can learn the pronunciations quickly and accurately before teaching your student. You won’t have to wonder if you are pronouncing them correctly—now you will know for sure!
Your student can learn directly from the program. Give him several phonograms to learn at a time. After he has clicked on each phonogram several times, he will have a good idea of the sounds. Then he can test himself by hovering the mouse over the phonogram, saying the sound(s) aloud, and clicking to hear the audio. He will have instant feedback, and instant feedback means faster learning.
My son just loves the entire program so far, especially the computer disk. I asked him if he liked it and he replied, "I don't like it, I LOVE it!" That says it all from my little five-year-old. I am quick to second his response.
The unique aspect of this spelling curriculum is that the creators have taken great effort to appeal to students with different learning styles. Letter tiles are included as a major component of the curriculum. While all students use these no matter what their learning style is, it is a great tool for kinesthetic learners. There are flash cards that visual learners can use to increase their understanding, and auditory learners are hearing the sounds throughout the lesson and are engaged in the optional CD-ROM as well. I have seen few programs as well-rounded as this one as far as learning styles are concerned.

I am thoroughly impressed with the materials and lesson layout of All About Spelling! I have seen many spelling programs, most of which are word family lists or look-say-spell methods that unfortunately do not work for many children. All About Spelling has step-by-step lessons with the gradual introduction of phonograms, uses multisensory learning (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), teaches phonemic awareness, blending, segmenting, and irregular words (a.k.a. Rule Breakers), uses dictation of words, phrases, and sentences for reinforcement, and more. Level Two then begins to move into teaching syllable types and syllable division. This is one of the first "spelling-focused" programs I've seen that is based solidly on Orton Gillingham principles.
I also got the optional Phonogram CD-ROM. It is a super-neat tool for reviewing phonograms and a must-have if you are unsure of some of the sounds yourself! You can click the phonograms right on the screen and it gives you all the sounds for that phonogram.
Every once in a while I come across something that I really believe in sharing. This is one of those times! All About Spelling is an excellent resource. I am confident that many families will benefit by using it.

My son practiced with this disk many times and can now recite the phonograms for every letter and combination possible! One thing that surprised me was that I wasn't even saying the sounds of the letters correctly when I was teaching him phonics! Instead of "wh", I was saying, "wuh". It helped me tremendously to be able to hear the correct sounds on the Phonograms disk.

I love all the AAS products, but my favorite duo is the Beehive Reader 1 with the Phonogram Audio CD-ROM. In addition to handing my son the reader, I set up the laptop computer with the phonograms CD next to him on his desk, so that if he has a question about any of the phonogram sounds (usually vowel teams) as he reads, then he can instantly hear the options and figure the word out on his own.
My son has a very dominant personality (a choleric, if you're familiar with that term), so it is important to let him have a feeling of independence as he learns. He doesn't like asking for or receiving help. (This also is part of why he is still an unethusiastic reader at age 9, in a highly book-oriented, non-tv-watching family; his personality gets in the way of his progress.)
So, the phonogram CD combined with the Reader 1 is an excellent combination for him. He has made great strides using them together, independent of Mom.
By the way, having a male voice pronouncing the phonograms probably helps also. We all know the stories about how early GPS systems were a flop because the male drivers turned them off. The men didn't like the female-sounding backseat driver voice. :)
Thank you so much for this versatile CD-ROM. It is so much more than just a pronunciation guide. We also use it as a game in various ways, as a review before spelling lessons, and even as a fun way to "do" spelling tests. The kids think it is very funny to get the computer to sound out the words...but I know they are the ones really doing the work. Just like Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine (my favorite book when I was in third grade, years ago).
